Texas Vehicle Inspection: What to Know

Safety inspection ended for most cars. Emissions did not — Fort Bend and Harris drivers still need the $18.50 drive-in when the vehicle is eligible.

Local tip · Sugar Land / Houston · JINS AUTO · updated Aug 19, 2026

The live version of this tip already had the right facts and not enough of them. If you register in Fort Bend or Harris County, “Texas ended safety inspection” does not mean you skip the shop. You still need a state Emission Inspection on eligible gasoline cars and light trucks. At JINS AUTO, 16220 West Bellfort St, Sugar Land / Four Corners, TX 77498, that visit is $18.50 drive-in. Call (346) 558-9674 if you want to ask whether your vehicle is in the program. Mon–Sat 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM. Sunday closed. No appointment for the inspection when we can take you.

What changed — and what did not

Texas dropped the old annual comprehensive safety inspection for most non-commercial passenger vehicles. Emissions testing did not go away in the metro counties that still run it. Sugar Land, Four Corners, Missouri City, Stafford, Richmond, Rosenberg, Mission Bend, Meadows Place, Fresno, a lot of Katy-area commutes, and much of southwest Houston sit in that world because of where the car is registered, not because of which shop you like. Follow current Texas DPS rules for year, fuel, and body style. Many pure electric vehicles are treated differently. We will tell you what applies when the car is here. We do not invent a rule that DPS did not write.

What the $18.50 visit actually is

It is a pass/fail sticker test, not a full mechanical. For a modern OBD-II car it is mostly a conversation with the computer: will it talk, are the readiness monitors set, is the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine) commanded on, and are there emissions-related codes. Depending on the vehicle, the process can also look at related hardware — catalyst path, exhaust, EVAP / gas cap, and the usual emissions-adjacent items DPS lists. Bring proof of insurance when the process asks for it.

We are a Texas state-certified inspection station. The license photo is on the homepage; we do not type a certificate number onto this page. The station landing page is Texas emission inspection in Sugar Land. This tip is the “what to know before you get in line” version of that visit. The only price we publish is $18.50.

How to not spend $18.50 on a fail you already know about

If you already failed somewhere else, bring the printout. Repeating the same test without a fix wastes the fee and an afternoon on West Bellfort. Repair is a separate conversation — we do not bury parts prices inside the inspection number, and we do not invent a pass.

Drive-in on West Bellfort — the right pin

Come during hours. If a lift job has the lane busy, you may wait a few minutes; this is a shop, not a kiosk. Combining the sticker with an oil change or a look at brakes is common — say so at the counter. Streamline Autoworx is a different shop on the same street. Do not merge the two if a map card blends names. We are JINS AUTO at 16220 West Bellfort St, (346) 558-9674, service@jinsautollc.com.

A pre-purchase look at a used car is the PPI page. That is not the $18.50 emission inspection. A climbing temp gauge is a cooling diagnosis — radiator and coolant — not something the sticker test is designed to catch. Thin pads can fail a safety screen when one still applies; they are not a reason to skip emissions. See brake pads if that is the actual worry.

If it fails

We explain the report in plain English, Spanish, or Chinese. Common neighbors of a fail here: EVAP leaks, oxygen-sensor and fuel-trim issues, misfires that also threaten the catalytic converter, and exhaust leaks that confuse monitors. See also failed emission / check-engine, plugs and coils, and exhaust. We will not claim a pass rate. The computer is ready or it is not.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need an appointment for the $18.50 inspection?

No. Drive in Monday–Saturday 8:30–6:00 when we can take you. Inspection is $18.50. If you also want a repair estimate, call or book so we know the symptom.

Will a check-engine light fail the test?

A commanded-on MIL fails the OBD emissions test. Incomplete readiness monitors can also block a pass even if the light is off. Scan first — do not pay for a fail you already know about.

Are you the same shop as Streamline Autoworx?

No. Streamline Autoworx is a different shop on the same street. JINS AUTO is 16220 West Bellfort St, Sugar Land / Four Corners, TX 77498, (346) 558-9674, service@jinsautollc.com.
