A code is a clue. We test the system so you do not buy a sensor — or a catalytic converter — by guesswork.

A check-engine light can be a loose gas cap. It can also be a misfire that is cooking a catalytic converter on the way to work down West Bellfort. JINS AUTO is at 16220 West Bellfort St, Sugar Land / Four Corners, TX 77498. We scan, verify, and test. We do not clear the light, hand you a printout, and call that a repair. If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually come in carefully. If it is flashing, reduce load and get help soon. Flashing typically means a severe misfire. That is how converters get expensive. When in doubt, call before you “just make it to Katy.” Related: do not ignore the light and misfire and rough idle.
P0420 is not a sentence that says “replace the catalytic converter.” It is a sentence that says the computer is unhappy with catalyst efficiency — which can also be an exhaust leak, a misfire, or an aging oxygen sensor. EVAP codes can be a cap, a hose, or a valve. Fuel-trim codes can be intake, MAF, fuel, or vacuum. We use scan data, freeze frame, a look at the engine bay, and targeted tests so the estimate matches the fault.
Complex intermittent faults take longer. “It only does it after it sits in Sugar Land heat for three hours” is useful information. Bring that sentence.
A commanded-on MIL typically fails a Texas OBD emissions inspection. Incomplete monitors after a battery pull can also block a pass. If you need a sticker, fix and verify readiness before paying for a fail cycle when you can. Drive-in inspection is $18.50 during business hours when we can take you — details on the inspection page and in this fail-test note.
Clearing codes without a fix makes inspection worse: monitors go incomplete and the light often returns on West Bellfort on the way home. If a battery died in this heat and the light came back, or a friend erased codes with a cheap scanner, tell us. We will check readiness before we take your $18.50 for a test you cannot pass yet. That is cheaper than a fail printout and a second Saturday trip.
Call with year, make, model, and whether the light is flashing. If the car is rough, overheating, or losing power, say that first. English, Spanish, and Chinese. If a parts-store already sold you a sensor that did not fix it, bring the part and the receipt. We would rather test than stack.

Steady light and normal driving: usually you can come in carefully. Flashing: reduce load and get help soon — that often means a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Call (346) 558-9674 if unsure.
A code is a starting clue, not a complete diagnosis. The same code can have several causes. We use scan data and tests so you do not replace parts by guesswork.
Yes in most OBD emissions tests if the MIL is commanded on. Incomplete monitors after a battery disconnect can also cause issues.
Many checks start the same day. Intermittent faults may need more time. Book or call with year/make/model and symptoms.
